Schwinn Paramount 70th Anniversary, Anyone got 10K?

Wow has this bike really been around that long? I can remember my fist big boy bike. It was a Schwinn. I loved it, pimped it out with some foam handler bar tape, even gave it a paint job with a can of RustOleum. This was of course my pre Euro Cyclist days.

This new version of the Schwinn flagship road bike is a nice ride, but for $10,000? Yes 10K. WTF, OMG Who now a days has the cash for a 10K road bike? Ok yes the true die-hard Schwinn fans will be lining up for this, but please! In short I can think of a few better buys...

1. An all out paid cycling training camp with your friends.
2. An endless supply of Belgian beers to drink with your friends.
3. Flesh colored skin suits for your entire club/team.

Dam and I really wanted the stand!

So here is a perfect example of a bike that someone took way past the limits.  I looked up the original bike on the Cannondale web site. Not a bad bike out of the box.

So looking at the upgrades: “Cateye basic computer, Adjustable gooseneck, flat bars (for comfort ride), Serfas gel seat, triple front ring, 11/34 mountain cassette, Shimano Deore XT mountain derailleur, Continental Duraskin+K tires, Truvativ crank, South Col seat expandable seat bag, bottle racks”.  Personally I would not call these upgrades, SRAM Red is an upgrade.

I did not run hard numbers here but let’s just say $600 in “upgrades”. So what did the rider get? A race worthy aluminum frame, touring bike. WTF! Take the original price of the bike, add in the $600 in upgrades and purchase yourself a steel touring bike. Done.
